ALLUVIUM is one of a series of four concurrent exhibitions in community-based spaces within walking distance of the Gowanus Canal exploring the theme SEDIMENT in response to the dredging of century-old sediment from the bottom of the Gowanus Canal. At the far reaches of the Gowanus alluvial plain, South Slope Local presents ALLUVIUM an exhibition of mixed-media paintings on vintage fabric by Sasha Chavchavadze. Fabric surfaces are built up with acrylic paint and paper collage, including images of found artifacts, objects from around the canal. Text from the amendments to the U.S. Constitution are applied to the warp and weft of the fabric, suggesting that, though some amendments can be toxic, most amendments are fertile ground on which to regenerate.
